At the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, the Takahē are so lovely to photograph. They are pretty easy going and some will walk over to you. This particular Takahē responded to my voice as I called it over.
The Takahē is an endangered native New Zealand bird. I love their stunning coloured plumage and their bright red beaks. There are a small number in the wild in Fiordland. Some of these birds can live up to 25 years when in captivity. These are large birds, weighing up to 3kg and reaching up to 50cm tall. Their wings are mainly used in shows for courting or aggressiveness.
